DOE intends to fund battery materials refining and production plants, battery cell and pack manufacturing facilities, and recycling facilities that create good-paying clean energy jobs. The funding is expected to be made available in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2021, DOE\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/06\/08\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-supply-chain-disruptions-task-force-to-address-short-term-supply-chain-discontinuities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/06\/08\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-supply-chain-disruptions-task-force-to-address-short-term-supply-chain-discontinuities\/\">published a 100-day review<\/a> of the large-capacity-battery supply chain. The review recommended establishing domestic production and processing capabilities for critical materials to support a fully domestic end-to-end battery supply chain. President Biden\u2019s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocates nearly $7 billion to strengthen the U.S. battery supply chain, which includes producing and recycling critical minerals without new extraction or mining, and sourcing materials for domestic manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs electric cars and trucks continue to grow in popularity within the United States and around the world, we must seize the chance to make advanced batteries \u2014 the heart of this growing industry \u2014 right here at home,\u201d said U.S. Sec. of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm.\u00a0\u201cWith funding from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we\u2019re making it possible to establish a thriving battery supply chain in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the global lithium-ion battery market expected to grow rapidly over the next\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-06\/FCAB%20National%20Blueprint%20Lithium%20Batteries%200621_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-06\/FCAB%20National%20Blueprint%20Lithium%20Batteries%200621_0.pdf\">decade<\/a>, DOE is making it possible for the United States to be prepared for market demand. Responsible and sustainable domestic sourcing of the critical materials used to make lithium-ion batteries \u2014 such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite \u2014 will help close the gap in supply chain disruptions and accelerate battery production in America.<\/p>\n<p>Funding\u00a0from\u00a0the Bipartisan Infrastructure\u00a0Law\u00a0will\u00a0allow DOE to\u00a0support\u00a0the creation of\u00a0new, retrofitted, and expanded domestic facilities for battery recycling and the production of battery materials, cell components and battery manufacturing.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eere-exchange.energy.gov\/Default.aspx#FoaId0596def9-c1cc-478d-aa4f-14b472864eba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/eere-exchange.energy.gov\/Default.aspx#FoaId0596def9-c1cc-478d-aa4f-14b472864eba\">Read the\u00a0full\u00a0notice of intent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0funding will also\u00a0support research, development, and demonstration of second-life applications for\u00a0batteries once used to power\u00a0EVs,\u00a0as well as\u00a0new processes for recycling, reclaiming, and\u00a0adding\u00a0materials\u00a0back into the battery supply chain.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eere-exchange.energy.gov\/Default.aspx#FoaId599442c8-d25a-4091-96c0-30c0610a6710\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/eere-exchange.energy.gov\/Default.aspx#FoaId599442c8-d25a-4091-96c0-30c0610a6710\">Read the\u00a0full\u00a0notice of\u00a0intent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both forthcoming opportunities are aligned with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/vehicles\/articles\/national-blueprint-lithium-batteries\" aria-label=\"\/eere\/vehicles\/articles\/national-blueprint-lithium-batteries\">National Blueprint for Lithium Batteries<\/a>, guidance released last year by the Federal Consortium for Advanced Batteries and led by DOE alongside the Departments of Defense, Commerce, and State.
